I N WARFARE IT is easier to fight a seen enemy with a known strategy and a clear plan of attack than an unseen enemy with an unknown strategy. It is quite different, however, when the assailant is a master of illusion. Ehrich Weiss was born to Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss in 1874 in Budapest, Hungary; after spending some time in the Midwest in America, the family settled in New York in 1887. Ehrich eventually started a magic act, changing his name to Harry Houdini. In his day he was known as the master illusionist, often called a magician by his followers. However, there was nothing really magic about the many tricks he used to astound his audiences around the world. He was noted as the master escape artist who was able to escape from any type of handcuff or restraint placed on him, including his famous escape from the Washington DC jail that once housed the assassin of President James Garfield. 1 One of his greatest feats was his underwater box escape in New York City’s East River.
