Men can be tempted by sight, by affection, and by emotional manipulation; women can be tempted by attention, word, and the position of the person. The adversary of mankind was successful to bring sin and separation from God into the life of the first couple, Adam and Eve. After six thousand years of experience in battle strategies, the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are the three main missiles from which all other darts originate (1 John 2:16). C ONFUSION B ETWEEN T ESTING AND T EMPTING At times there is confusion in the body of Christ between the meaning and purpose of testing and temptation. A test can be a trial of your faith that God permits to bring you forth as gold being purified in the fire (1 Pet. 1:7). Temptation can become a burning fire, but the purposes and end results of the two are different. God allows a testing of your faith, but Satan is the tempter initiating temptation (Matt. 4:3). James 1:13 reminds us that God cannot be tempted with evil and does not tempt men. When the Israelites were journeying in the wilderness, God put them to a test to reveal to them what was really on the inside of their souls (Deut. 8:2). They were out of Egypt, but the thinking of Egypt remained in them, evidenced when they worshipped a golden calf (Exod. 32) reminiscent of the idol god Apis, a bull
