Satan would inflict Job with boils on his flesh, but he was restrained from taking Job’s life (Job 2:4–6). Christ promised spiritual authority over “all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19) and gave believers a special power through the infilling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). In the Gospels and Acts the apostles rebuked evil spirits, and they departed from the afflicted (Matt. 17:18). If we submit ourselves to God, we can “resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Peter added that you must resist the enemy, “steadfast in the faith” (1 Pet. 5:9). Obviously the enemy is not all powerful. The enemy wants you to believe that he is stronger, smarter, and greater than he actually is. This deception often feels confirmed to us when we look around and see the influence evil has over society and throughout the world. Satan is not more powerful than the Almighty; he simply has a massive population pull from those who are willing to submit to him instead of resisting him. Neither is he smarter than you; he’s just more experienced than you. He has played the game longer and has a playbook full of strategies and tricks that have been effective for many millennia. His bluff is that one trick played in the game of life where the formation reads, “This is a run,” but the result will be a pass when you least expect it. He pulls off the onside kick at the beginning of the game instead at the conclusion when the game is tied. This is why we cannot be ignorant of his devices or methods (2 Cor. 2:11).
