deserving of his sufferings. After weeks and perhaps months of these friends debating, discussing, and attempting to explain what they really did not know or understand, God eventually came on the scene in a whirlwind and revealed the following: And so it was, after the L ORD had spoken these words to Job, that the L ORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.” —J OB 42:7 While these friends were sincere in their observations , they were sincerely incorrect in their opinions. Just as Job’s friends did, when a terrible tragedy happens to a believer, other believers attempt to comfort the person by trying to explain why it happened. A child passes, and a friend will suggest, “Heaven needed an angel, so the Lord took the child.” A minister dies young, and someone explains that: “God needed him in heaven to prepare for the return of Christ.” These statements have been used and may be sincere, but they do nothing to comfort for the loss. In reality, there are seasons of difficulty and trials that cannot be explained, and we must simply trust God’s will and wisdom. Some things we will only understand when we join God in heaven.
