replied, “To and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it” (Job 1:7; 2:2). Angels have access to heaven, and evil spirits have access to the regions under the crust of the earth. When this spirit emerged, King Saul never personally saw the person with his eyes, but he asked the witch for a description. She described the spirit as an “old man . . . covered with a mantle,” and Saul perceived it was Samuel (1 Sam. 28:14). Remember, Saul never saw this spirit, and the information came from the mouth of the witch with a familiar spirit—it was not the voice of what was allegedly Samuel. In this process the witch is acting as a medium, or a go-between between Saul and the spirit. This was how (as it is today) a person who allegedly consults the dead brings information to the living. The alleged departed never speaks through the air in an audible voice, only through the voice of the medium, or in this case the witch. All of the above evidence indicates that this spirit was a familiar spirit that had specific knowledge. The main argument that this was literally Samuel comes from the precise accuracy by which this being from the underworld predicts would happen to Saul and his sons: Then Samuel said: “So why do you ask me, seeing the L ORD has departed from you and has become your enemy? And the L ORD has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the L ORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of the L ORD nor
