If these old houses are “possessed” by some type of a spirit, then the real question become this: Is this the spirit of a departed person, or is it actually a familiar spirit, which the Bible warns against seeking? Scripture is clear as to what happens when a human being passes away. We are all a tripartite being of a body, soul, and a spirit (1 Thess. 5:23). The old English word ghost used in the 1611 King James translation referred to the inner spirit of each individual—the part that is eternal. When the human spirit departs from the physical body, it retains a similar appearance and feature of the physical body that it indwelt (1 Cor. 13:12). “Giving up the ghost” is a phrase used to describe the departing of the soul and spirit from the physical body.
