New Testament (2 Cor. 7:1; Eph. 5:4; James 1:21; Rev. 17:4). Oddly enough, four different Greek words are translated as filthiness in these four passages. The word used by Paul alludes to a stain, like a stain on a garment. He is referring to sins of the flesh and spirit . The fleshly sins are found in Galatians 5:19–21; they are self-explanatory and can be visibly witnessed in a person’s words or actions. One fact is clear. We will never remove what we enjoy and never cleanse what we permit. Willingness to be free must be mingled with the desire for freedom.
