Sin! It seemed to be an odd title for a well-known minister, but he used the Hebrew 12 passage as the main text. Without explaining what his besetting sin was, he gave a miniature discourse on the subject of laying aside the sin. Years later after writing the book, his besetting sin became public knowledge when, prior to preaching under his big tent, he was arrested in a major city for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was bailed out and was told to confess before the congregation, but when he arrived, the people believed he had been set up by the police. Instead of confessing and asking for prayer for his own deliverance, he preached over top of his besetting sin, and a short time later, he suddenly passed away while in a hotel room in California. Some who personally knew him and traveled with him said they never knew he had this problem and were surprised when it surfaced. However, despite his love for God, which was genuine, and his gift to preach, which was powerful, his weight and sin defeated him toward the end of his life, costing him a powerful legacy. A similar story was related to me by a fellow minster concerning a minister whom I knew of from childhood. My father said this man could quote hundreds of scriptures and had an amazing faith to pray for the sick. In a tent crusade in the early 1950s, with his own eyes my father saw this man pray for a man with a large goiter, and it instantly disappeared.
