It is important for a believer to understand that the keys (or authority) of death are no longer in the control of the kingdom of darkness. The door of heaven does not open on this side of heaven, but from the inside, where Christ has the key to open the door of eternity and welcome His children into the kingdom of heaven! With Christ controlling the key of hell, He can shut the door to this underworld of the departed when you receive Him in a redemptive covenant. He will keep you out of the land of eternal damnation. Holding the keys of death, He alone determines when and how you will depart this life. Death, however, is an appointment. You may live a short life or a long life, but at some point your life will end: “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). The word appointed refers to a moment that is reserved and laid up for a particular time. If Christ should delay His return, we will all die in the future. Yet we must never be concerned about Satan’s authority over death, as he has been stripped of his authority by the resurrection of Christ.
