—J OB 2:4–6 Notice that the Lord instructed Satan to “spare his life.” Without the supernatural hedge of protection, it appears the adversary would have been able to strike Job to the point of death. However, Satan was put under restrictions by God Himself. Even through Job was smitten with a flesh-rotting disease (Job 2:7–8; 7:5), he survived this terrible test and lived a total of one hundred forty years after the attacks, seeing his children, their children, and even four generations of descendants (Job 42:16). With the death and resurrection of Christ, the Lord seized Satan’s authority over death. One of my favorite passages dealing with Christ defeating death is found in Hebrews 2:14– 15: Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Let’s consider the question, “Can Satan take my life or the lives of my family members?” There is no question that the adversary will attempt to create circumstances in which a believer’s life can be taken prematurely.
