CHAPTER 7 THE IMPORTANCE OF FIGHTING PRIVATE DEMONS

M ANY YEARS AGO I received a call from a very dear pastor friend who was quite distraught. For several months he had been bombarded with attacks from outside his church that included investigations concerning taxes, betrayal of friends, a terrible sickness that had struck one of his children, financial stress in the church, and a local newspaper whose writers set out to humiliate him in the community. As this whirlwind of trouble was spinning into an uncontrollable storm, he was himself in a very dark depression, to the point that his primary care doctor told him he was burnt out and near a breakdown. During this time he was hit with the strongest missile in the arsenal of the enemy. He was fighting a public war but also a private demon . The church and community knew what was being reported in the media, but the real struggle was taking place when he was alone and the darts of the enemy were flying against his mind. While these assaults were sudden, multiplied, and unexpected, these targeted strategies may have
