In 1768, the Rev. John Parkhurst produced the first Hebrew English lexicon. In the introduction, he stated that he believed that six thousand years ago, Hebrew was the first language spoken on Earth between Adam and God.1 If this is correct, you might speak Hebrew when you get to heaven! There is a Jewish tradition that the first man, Adam, spoke an ancient form of the Hebrew language in the Garden of Eden. We know Adam had knowledge of a language, as he named the animals (Gen. 2:19–20). Both Adam and his wife, Eve, heard the voice of God in the garden (Gen. 3:8). God entered Eden in the “cool of the day” (Gen. 3:8). The Hebrew word for cool is ruach , and it alludes to the “wind, breath, or the air.” We would say that
