For some Christians, any preaching that includes a prosperity message is an overemphasis of money or things that blurs the vision of a believer, who winds up stressed out with the “cares of this world” (Mark 4:19). Other Christians tend to make prosperity the heartbeat of their ministry, proving it works by the stuff they accumulate. The purest meaning of the word prosper is found in the Scriptures themselves. The word prosper is penned forty-nine times in the English translation of the Bible, while the word prosperous is recorded eight times, and prosperity is found seventeen times. In the Old Testament, the common Hebrew word for prosper is tsalach and can mean “to come out, go through, and accomplish success.” God prospered Israel when He brought the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, commanded them to go over the Jordan River, and promised them success if they would follow Him. Joshua was instructed: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. —Joshua 1:8 This is the only passage where the word success is found in the King James Version of the Bible. The root word means, “to be intelligent,” but it also means, “to act intelligent, instruct, or to be expert.” Today, we would say that success alludes to the
