What God Knew God commanded Adam to replenish the earth (Gen. 1:28) and gave Noah and his sons the same instruction after the Flood (Gen. 9:1). Replenishing can only occur by reproduction. A son can carry on the family name, while sons and daughters continue the family legacy. In the Torah, God desired that a man’s name and family heritage would continue from generation to generation (Deut. 25:5–6). This can only be done through procreation. God’s family blessing is still intact and commands that we should “be fruitful and multiply” (Gen. 1:22). What Devout Jews Know The Jews know that their entire nation was formed from barren wombs blessed with sons of destiny. The Orthodox communities recognize that children are a heritage from God (Ps. 127:3) and begin planning their families immediately after marriage.
