Samson was born during a time of Israel’s long captivity to the Philistines (Judg. 14). Samuel was exalted as God was debasing the corrupt priesthood of Eli and his sons (1 Sam. 3:11–13). During John’s birth, the temple rituals had become formal and somewhat meaningless to the average Jew. John’s church was in the wilderness, his message was repentance, and his converts were Jews dissatisfied with the religious rituals without righteousness (Matt. 3:1–8). These sons of the barren womb each wrote their own chapter in the book of Israel’s destiny: Isaac transferred the nation’s destiny when Esau’s blessing was transferred to Jacob. Jacob transported the nation by moving them out of Canaan to life in Egypt. Jos eph transplanted the nation by relocating them to Egypt during a global famine. Samson transfixed the nation through his supernatural strength and single-handed victories. Samuel transfused the nation, bringing new hope and life by his example and by anointing King David.
