Widows and single mothers Just as the phrase fatherless implies several different applications, the word widow has several possible applications. The primary meaning is, “a woman whose husband has died and she has not remarried.” I personally believe there are three types of women who can be classified as widows. Widows indeed—women whose husbands have passed away and they remain unmarried Spiritual widows—women whose unbelieving husbands never attend church and hinder the family spiritually Single mothers—women who are divorced, have AWOL husbands, or perhaps a husband incarcerated for life Church memberships include these three types of women with children who are often balancing on a tightrope of working a secular job, being a homemaker, and being the spiritual priest of the family.
